Primo Levi – “I was looking for you in the stars”

I was looking for you in the stars
when I questioned them as a child.
I asked to the mountains for you,
but they gave to me just a few times of solitude e short peace.

Because you were missing,
in the long evenings
when I meditated,
in the senseless blasphemy
that the world was all a mistake of God.

I make a mistake in the world.
And when, before the death,
I shouted “No!” from every fiber,
that I had not yet finished,
that I still had to do too,
it was because you stood in front of me,
you were next to me, like today.

It happens,
a man and a woman in the light of the sun.
I came back because you were there.
